Latimer County Public Library (Wilburton)

The Wilburton Public Library opened its doors in May 1966, in a rock structure located at 208 N. Central. This library was manned by volunteers.

In 1968, the Wilburton Public Library became one of many branches with the Choctaw Nation Multi-County System. 1986, the library system changed its name to Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma and in 2020, the system changed its name again to a more streamlined, Southeast Oklahoma Library System.

September 1995, was a new beginning for the Wilburton Public Library as they were able to move into a larger, (10,000 square feet), and new building. With the move, came a new name which is now Latimer County Public Library. The library serves the 10,000 plus population of Latimer County.

The library has 2 meeting rooms, along with the Historical Society and the Wilburton Alumni having rooms of their own. It is located one block north of City Hall and on-half block south of the Wilburton Elementary School at 301 W. Ada.

The library is also known for its dinosaur sculptures that are made out of scrap vehicles. These sculptures were made by Steve Carson and are on loan for display.

August 2019. Latimer County Public Library was pleased to announce a “friends” group had been formed. The Friends of the Wilburton Public Library was able to obtain a “seed” grant from FOLIO (Friends of the Library in Oklahoma) to assist them in acquiring their 501c (3) status.
